While Sorry to Bother You certainly has a lot to say about race and gender, it is the exploration of the barriers marginalized peoples can erect between each other in hyper-capitalistic systems that is Riley’s standout contribution. There are certainly more literal voices to listen to among the commentary on race and race relations Sorry to Bother You toys with here. Due in no small part to cinematographer Doug Emmett, Sorry to Bother You is a visual feast that brilliantly exploits the simplest effects, including a scene literally dropping Cassius into the homes of his clients.

TV monitors, local bars, even a seductive elevator reveal an uncomfortable familiarity with corporate America they parody. And the inclusion of several celebrity voices add more hilarity to the mix.Įven greater is Riley’s treatment of Oakland itself as a kooky character constantly unraveling itself as a strange metaphor unto itself. Supporting cast members Steven Yeun and Jermaine Fowler add to the yucks as Cassius’s anticapitalist coworkers as does Omari Hardwick. The rest of the film’s cast perform equally well. In an otherwise familiar rags to riches story, they make fantastic great use of the situational comedy available to them as well as their inner conflicts. While Sorry to Bother You entertains with its thinly-veiled parodies of reality tv and internet culture of Wall Street are entertaining, Stanfield and Thompson provide a grounding presence in Riley’s theme park of weird, flexing comedic and dramatic chops in a genuinely endearing arc.
